STEEL FIREWALL SYSTEMS

Non-Combustible. Architecturally Modern. Built to Outlast Any Condition.

Steel That Doesn't Burn. Fencing That Doesn't Compromise.

Our steel firewall fencing products are engineered from high-tensile, non-combustible steel — delivering complete privacy, exceptional durability, and the highest available fire resistance. This is what modern, fire-safe fencing looks like.

Overview of Steel Firewall Fencing

Steel is one of the most effective non-combustible fencing materials available — and when properly coated and engineered, it delivers performance that wood, vinyl, and standard composite materials simply cannot match in fire-risk environments.

Fence Specialties’ steel firewall category is anchored by Colorbond® Steel — an Australian-engineered, high-tensile steel fencing system with over 50 years of proven performance in the world’s harshest climates. Now available in the United States through select dealers, Colorbond® Steel brings an ignitability index of zero and a full range of contemporary colors and panel profiles to the American market.

Whether you’re building a new fence in a wildfire-prone area, replacing aging wood fencing, or specifying materials for a fire-code-compliant installation, our steel firewall systems deliver the combination of aesthetics, performance, and safety that modern properties demand.

Fire Safety: What the Research Says

Colorbond® Steel’s fire performance is not a marketing claim — it’s the result of independent scientific research conducted by the Co-operative Research Centre for Bushfire (Bushfire CRC) and CSIRO (Australia’s national scientific research agency). Their study, “Research and investigation into the performance of residential boundary fencing in bushfires,” was conducted at the NSW Rural Fire Service Experimental Testing Site — at the time believed to be the only bushfire simulator in the world.

The research findings:

“A steel fence offers greater protection to people’s homes against bushfire than other alternative materials because of its non-combustibility.”

— Bushfire CRC / CSIRO

“Of the different materials tested, pre-painted and metallic coated sheet steel (in this case made from COLORBOND steel) performed best under all exposure conditions.”

— Bushfire CRC / CSIRO

Three exposure levels were tested, each simulating progressively more severe fire conditions:

Level of Exposure TestedTest DescriptionResult for Colorbond®
Litter IgnitedLeaf litter placed on fence rails and around fence posts, then ignitedNo structural failure
Litter Ignited + Pre-RadiationTypical of an advancing bushfire with pre-radiation but without direct flame contactNo structural failure
Simulation of Structural FireFull continuous flame immersion for 30 minutes — simulating worst-case adjacent house fireNo structural failure

Colorbond® Steel is also used in bushfire-prone areas of Australia, including in the most extreme classification: BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level — Flame Zone), as defined in AS 3959:2018.

NFPA Class A Alignment

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) classifies fireproof materials into categories, with Class A being the highest rating for fire resistance. Colorbond® Steel’s performance aligns with Class A requirements across four key criteria:

1. Non-Combustibility

— Colorbond® Steel has been tested for its ability to withstand extreme heat and direct flame contact without igniting or sustaining combustion.

2. Fire Spread Resistance

— Performance data from the Bushfire CRC research demonstrates that Colorbond® Steel effectively limits flame spread — consistent with NFPA requirements for materials that prevent fire from propagating to adjacent structures.

3. Thermal Conductivity

— Colorbond® Steel’s design minimizes heat retention — it does not retain and re-radiate heat the way masonry or dense materials can — further reducing fire propagation risk in fire-prone environments.

4. Compliance with Local Codes

— In many fire-prone areas across the U.S., local building codes require Class A rated fencing materials. Colorbond® Steel’s demonstrated bushfire performance positions it as a suitable and defensible specification choice for residential and commercial fencing in these jurisdictions.

Performance, Quality & Durability

Fence Specialties supplies Colorbond® Steel because of three defining characteristics that set it apart from domestic steel fencing alternatives:

Durability

Manufactured in Australia to Australian Standards AS1397 and AS/NZS 2728 — and tested in harsh Australian conditions for over 50 years. Every sheet leaves the factory with measurable, standards-compliant quality built in.

Wind Performance

Colorbond® Steel has been tested to face challenging weather conditions including wind. Wind classification is determined by four factors: wind region, terrain category, shielding factor, and topography — ensuring the right specification for each site.

Fire Performance

Of all fencing materials tested in the Bushfire CRC study, Colorbond® Steel performed best under every exposure condition — including 30-minute full flame immersion simulating an adjacent structural fire.

Color & Design Range

Choose from 15 colors designed to reflect natural landscapes — including options that can closely match the appearance of traditional white vinyl fencing. Profiles, heights, and gate configurations add further design flexibility.

Product Types

Our steel firewall category currently features Colorbond® Steel Fences & Gates as the flagship product. This product line includes:

Panel Configurations

  • Standard fence panels with gate integration
  • Panels with aluminum slat topper for customizable privacy
  • Under-fence aluminum base panels for ground-level gap closure

Panel Profiles

  • Chevron Panel — Zigzag profile infill sheet (27-gauge steel)
  • Vertiline Panel — Trapezoidal rib profile infill sheet (27-gauge steel)
  • Linear Panel — Premium ribbed profile infill sheet (27-gauge steel)

Installation Configurations

  • Raked — follows sloped ground with angled infill cut to match terrain
  • Stepped — level-top panel configuration that follows site contours in defined steps
  • Tapered — smooth angled transition at fence run termination points

Applications

Steel firewall fencing systems are specified for:

High-fire-hazard severity zone (VHFHSZ) residential properties in California and Western states

New subdivisions and tract housing requiring non-combustible perimeter fencing per local fire codes

Commercial and industrial perimeter security where long-term durability and fire resistance are priorities

Hillside and rural residential properties with extended wildfire exposure risk

Coastal and marine-adjacent properties where both fire resistance and corrosion performance are required

HOA-governed communities where consistent, modern aesthetics and fire safety must both be satisfied
