TimberTech aluminum deck framing
You can specify a Class A deck surface and still build a fire hazard, because the boards are only the lid. Underneath sits a timber frame in a dark, unswept cavity full of dry leaf litter — and that is where a deck fire usually starts.
Aluminum framing removes the fuel from under the deck. It also happens to carry the best warranty in the entire TimberTech range: lifetime, residential.
The number that matters
The aluminum framing warranty runs for the lifetime of the framing member for a residential purchaser in standard applications, and ten years commercial. Nothing else we sell under the TimberTech name is warranted that long — decking tops out at lifetime on Advanced PVC and thirty years on composite, and railing is twenty-five.
That tells you something about how the manufacturer rates the risk. Metal in a dry cavity is a much more predictable thirty-year proposition than timber in the same place.
Worth getting right
Picture what is actually under a raised deck. Fallen leaves, pine needles, windblown debris, settled over years into the gaps between the joists. Nobody sweeps under a deck; on most homes you physically cannot reach it.
During an ember attack, those embers do not need to burn through your Class A deck boards. They fall between them, into that litter bed, and start a fire in a sheltered cavity with a timber frame directly above it and a wall directly beside it. The deck surface can be genuinely non-combustible and the house still goes.
This is why California’s Zone 0 rules concentrate on the first five feet around a structure, and why we treat framing as a fire product rather than an upsell. A non-combustible frame means the litter can burn out without taking the structure with it.
It is also the reason we will occasionally recommend spending less on the boards and more on what holds them up.

Why this material
Timber framing has one advantage — it is cheap on day one. Every other property of the material is a liability over thirty years in a Southern California backyard.
Non-combustible
A metal frame is not fuel. There is no charring, no structural loss, and no contribution to a fire in the cavity beneath the deck.
No rot at the ledger
The ledger connection is the one hidden joint holding the deck to the house, so it is the connection most worth protecting — and aluminum simply will not rot there.
Dead straight, permanently
Aluminum does not crown, cup, twist or shrink. The board surface stays flat, so fasteners do not pull and boards do not develop a wave.
No termites, ever
In a region where subterranean termites are routine, a metal substructure removes the inspection entirely.
Longer spans, fewer posts
The strength-to-weight ratio permits wider joist spacing and cleaner sightlines under an elevated deck.

Aluminum framing pairs with any decking we sell — it is not restricted to a particular collection, and it is the single best upgrade available on a deck inside a fire zone.

Why TimberTech
Aluminum deck framing is a small market and the systems are not interchangeable. The advantage of the TimberTech system is that the framing, the fasteners, the joist tape and the deck boards are all covered inside the same warranty family, with a documented labour replacement provision on top.
That matters when something goes wrong. A deck built from four suppliers’ parts becomes an argument about whose component failed. One system means one claim, and we are not stuck refereeing it on your behalf.
It is also a properly engineered kit rather than raw extrusion — joists, beams, ledger connections and hardware designed to work together, with published span tables a plan checker will accept.

Next step
On a fire-zone job this is the decision that does the most work, and it is the one most quotes leave out. Bring the plan set — we will price the substructure properly and tell you where it is worth the money and where it is not.
A note on finish
Framing is the one part of this system you will never look at again once the boards go down. There is no color selection to make here, and that is the point — the substructure is specified on span, load and corrosion resistance, not appearance.
The one place it does become visible is fascia and exposed rim on an elevated deck. If your frame will be seen from below or from the garden, tell us at quoting stage — that changes what we specify and how we detail the edge.
