Decking / TimberTech / Railing
TimberTech railing
Railing is the one deck component with a code requirement, a safety function and a daily tactile relationship with the people using it — and it is the component most quotes treat as an afterthought.
It is also the part that decides whether you can see your view or merely see your railing. Six systems, one warranty term, and fourteen installation and section documents hosted right here.
Why this is not a trim decision
A railing has to stop a child falling four feet, give an adult something secure to hold on a wet step, and stay out of the way of the reason you built the deck in the first place. Those three requirements are in direct tension.
A railing heavy enough to feel reassuring is usually heavy enough to block the view. One slim enough to vanish can feel flimsy under the hand. And a handrail that looks elegant in a photograph often fails the graspability rule the moment an inspector puts a hand around it.
Which system you choose is really a decision about which of those three you are prioritising. That is a conversation worth having at the counter, and it is why we stock six different answers rather than one.
Why this material
Before taste enters the picture, a residential guard has code obligations. These are the ones that govern the choice in practice.
Guard height
Residential guards are generally required at 36″ where the walking surface is more than 30″ above grade. Your local jurisdiction has the final word.
The 4″ sphere rule
Openings must not permit a 4″ sphere to pass. This is what determines baluster spacing and it is the most commonly failed item.
Graspable handrail
Where a handrail is required on stairs, it must be continuous and graspable — a wide flat top rail alone will not satisfy it.
Load resistance
Guards must resist a concentrated load at the top rail. This is why post spacing and the post-to-frame connection are not adjustable on site.
Stair geometry
Rake angle changes the bracket and often the baluster. The section drawings below cover the configurations.
25-year warranty, all systems
Every rail product carries 25 years residential and 10 commercial — the term does not vary by system.
We are a supplier, not your building department. Treat the above as what to ask about, and confirm the specifics for your jurisdiction — we are happy to help you do that.
The systems
Every one of these carries the same 25-year residential warranty, so the decision is about sightlines, feel and budget rather than durability.

Illustration. Glass infill keeps the code-required guard while giving up almost nothing of the view — the reason it is the most requested option on hillside decks.
Where it goes
Most railing conversations are about looks. These two are about behaviour, and they are the ones customers thank us for afterwards.
A drink rail turns the edge into a bar
A wide flat top cap gives you a usable ledge along the whole run of the deck. On a view lot it becomes where everyone actually stands, and it costs far less than the outdoor furniture it replaces. There is a dedicated drink rail installation guide below.
Graspable handrails are a code item, not a nicety
A rounded, continuous, graspable handrail is what stairs require, and a wide top rail does not satisfy it on its own. It is also simply the difference between confident and tentative on wet steps. We host the ADA handrail guide below.
Fire zones
None of the railing systems carries its own California State Fire Marshal WUI listing — those listings exist for decking, not for guards. So the sensible approach in a fire zone is to reason from the material rather than wait for a certificate.
Aluminum railing is non-combustible. Impression Rail Express and Reliance Rail are metal systems and are the ones we recommend where the deck sits inside a Wildland Urban Interface area or a Zone 0 setback. Composite and PVC rail systems contain combustible material, exactly as the decking equivalents do.
We would rather tell you that plainly than imply a rating that does not exist. The same logic applies to our aluminum fencing, and it is the honest form of the argument.
The document library
Railing has more installation literature than anything else we carry, because the bracket, the baluster and the post connection all change with the configuration. This is the map.

Next step
The right railing depends on what you are trying to see past it and who is going to be holding it. Send a photo from where you will actually stand and we will tell you which of the six systems is the right call — and which one we would not put there.
Finishes
Railing color is a longer-lived decision than deck color, because you touch it and you look through it every day. The range is deliberately small — these are painted and powder-coated finishes, not woodgrains, so what you see is what goes up.
One thing worth knowing at the counter: on the Classic Composite Series the matte finishes carry an extra 25-year Fade & Stain warranty that Gloss White does not. If you are choosing between Gloss White and Matte White on looks alone, the matte is the better long-term buy.
Classic Composite Series
Premier Rail, RadianceRail, Trademark Rail
Matte finishes carry an additional 25-year Fade & Stain Limited Warranty. Trademark Rail is offered in White and Matte White only.
Impression Rail Express Series
Classic, Modern and Drink Rail profiles
Aluminum balusters are Black only. Accent lights are offered in White, Matte White and Architectural Bronze.
Finish names and availability are TimberTech’s, taken from the TimberTech Rail Order Guide (2024 edition) and checked 9 August 2026. Chips are sampled from that guide’s own printed color strips and are shown for identification only — screens and print both shift color, so confirm against a physical sample before ordering.
