Why Redwood

Time-Tested California Beauty

For over 100 years, California redwood has been the gold standard for outdoor wood. Naturally rot- and insect-resistant, beautifully grained, and a renewable resource — it's earned its place in California backyards.

Naturally Durable

Redwood's natural tannins resist rot, insects, and decay — no chemical treatments required. The reason it's been California's deck wood of choice for generations.

Authentic Wood Look

Rich, warm grain patterns that age gracefully into a silver-gray patina — or stain to lock in the original red tones. Every board is unique.

Locally Sourced

Sourced from trusted Sequoia mill partners in Northern California — shorter supply chain, sustainable forestry practices, and reliable inventory.

Six Grades, Every Budget

From premium Clear All Heart for showcase projects to economical Deck Common for utility builds — we stock the full grade range.

The Six Grades

From Premium to Practical

California redwood is graded from top-quality showcase boards down to functional structural boards. Here's how the six grades we stock compare — top to bottom in quality.

GRADE 01 — PREMIUM

Clear All Heart

The highest grade. 100% heartwood, knot-free, virtually defect-free. The most rot-resistant and longest-lasting — for showcase decks where appearance is everything.

GRADE 02

Clear

Knot-free and near-defect-free, but may contain a small amount of sapwood. Premium appearance with excellent durability — a strong alternative to All Heart at a lower price.

GRADE 03

Heart B Grade

100% heartwood with limited small, tight knots. Excellent rot resistance with character grain — ideal for natural-looking high-quality decks.

GRADE 04

B Grade

May include sapwood and limited tight knots. Beautiful character for a less formal look. Strong value for full-deck builds.

GRADE 05

Deck Heart

All-heart redwood with more knots permitted. Strong rot resistance at a workable price — a contractor favorite for residential decks.

GRADE 06 — VALUE

Deck Common

The most economical grade — sapwood and knots permitted. Best for utility decks, fencing inserts, and projects where natural redwood character is valued over premium appearance.

FAQ

Redwood Decking Questions

How long does redwood decking last?
With proper care (periodic cleaning and re-staining/sealing every 2–3 years), premium-grade redwood decks routinely last 25–40+ years. Higher heartwood content (Clear All Heart, Heart B) lasts longer than grades with sapwood.
Do I need to seal or stain redwood?
Not for structural integrity — redwood is naturally rot-resistant. But to maintain its red color (instead of weathering to silver-gray), apply a quality UV-blocking stain or sealer every 2–3 years.
What's the difference between "heart" and "common" grades?
"Heart" means the board is 100% heartwood — the dense, durable inner wood of the tree, which is naturally rot-resistant. Boards without "heart" in the name may include sapwood (the outer wood), which is less rot-resistant.
Is redwood a sustainable choice?
California redwood is sourced under strict forestry regulations, and our mill partners practice sustainable harvest and replanting. Redwood is also fully biodegradable at end-of-life, unlike PVC.
Can I see samples before buying?
Yes. All four Fence Specialties locations carry physical samples of every redwood grade we stock. Visit in person and our team will walk you through the differences.
Do you deliver?
Yes. All four locations offer delivery within our service areas, and we transfer inventory between branches for special orders. Contact your nearest location for delivery zones and rates.
