It is also the only decking we sell that holds California State Fire Marshal WUI listings — which, on a lot in a fire hazard severity zone, is the difference between a deck that passes plan check and one that gets redrawn.

Why decks lose houses
Embers travel a mile ahead of a fire front and they fall. A deck is the one part of a house designed to catch things that fall on it — and then hold them, in the gaps between boards and in the dark space underneath.
The space under a raised deck is where the real risk sits. Pine needles and leaf litter drift in and nobody sweeps it, because nobody sees it. An ember landing there is inside the structure before anything visible has caught.
So the question for a deck in a fire zone is not only what the boards are made of. It is what the boards are made of, what the frame under them is made of, and whether the space beneath stays clear. All three have to be right.

Choosing a color in a fire zone
Here is the one detail worth knowing up front, and it is an easy one to get right.
Fire listings apply to specific TimberTech collections rather than to the brand as a whole. So in a fire hazard severity zone, the collection you choose matters as much as the color — a plan reviewer will look for the listing on that exact collection.
Just tell us the project address first and we will take care of it. We will narrow the palette to listed collections from the start and put the listing right on your quote, so the color you fall in love with is one you can actually use.
Get all three right and the deck stops being the weak point in the elevation.

The line

Advanced PVC Decking
100% PVC with no wood flour, so there is nothing organic in the board for moisture or insects to work on. Cool Touch technology keeps the surface up to 30° cooler underfoot — which matters on a south-facing deck in Riverside.

Composite Decking
A four-sided polymer cap over a composite core — the wood-grain look with far less upkeep, and no annual sanding and staining cycle. Capping on all four faces is what stops moisture entering the core at the cut ends.

Aluminum Framing
A non-combustible substructure that will not rot, warp, twist, or burn. Under a deck in a fire hazard severity zone this is the part of the specification we argue hardest for — a listed board on a timber frame still leaves you a combustible structure in the place you cannot see.

Specifying it properly
In that order. Color is the last one, even though it is the one everybody starts with.

Is the parcel in a WUI or FHSZ?
This single answer decides whether the palette is the whole range or only the listed collections. Check it first, not last.

What is the frame?
Aluminum framing on anything raised in a fire zone. A listed board on a timber joist is half a solution.

How does under-deck stay clear?
Skirting, access for sweeping, and non-combustible ground cover. Design the maintenance in, because it will not happen otherwise.

Then choose the color
Darker boards run hotter. If the deck faces south or west and gets bare feet, Cool Touch Advanced PVC is worth the difference.
The rest of the case
Most TimberTech decks we supply are not fire-motivated at all. They are bought by people who have already owned a timber deck and do not want another one.
No sanding, no staining
The finish is the board. There is no annual refinishing weekend and no color drift between the boards you replaced and the ones you didn’t.
Fade & stain warranties
Separate warranties cover fade and stain performance, not just structural failure — the two things that actually make people replace a deck.
Cool underfoot
Cool Touch Advanced PVC runs up to 30° cooler than comparable boards. On a west-facing deck in inland Southern California this is the difference between usable and not.
Up to 50-year limited warranty
On Advanced PVC. Longer than most people own the house, and transferable — which shows up in the appraisal.
The grain is embossed into the cap, not printed on it. Up close this is what separates the premium boards from the entry-level ones.
Poolside is where PVC earns its price: chlorine, standing water and bare feet in the same place.
Installed
Composite with a warm board, black rail and integrated lighting.
Riser lighting is specified at framing stage — retrofitting it means lifting boards.
Colors
Thirty-four colors across eight collections. These are TimberTech’s own board photographs, not color approximations — so what you see here is the grain and the tone you will get. Screens still lie, though: pick two or three, then come to the branch and put the real samples side by side in daylight before you commit.

Compare materials
Nobody buys a deck twice. The honest answer is that wood is cheaper on the invoice and more expensive for the next twenty years, composite is the value play where fire is not a factor, and Advanced PVC is the one to specify when the deck has to survive heat, water, bare feet or a fire zone.

Sustainability
The greenest deck is the one you only build once. TimberTech Composite is made with up to 85% recycled content — reclaimed wood fibre and recycled plastic that would otherwise be landfill. Advanced PVC goes the other direction: zero organic material, which means zero rot, zero mould and zero insect damage, so the board is still a board in thirty years.

These are the six questions our counter staff answer most often about TimberTech. If yours is not here, call the branch — you will get a person.
Does TimberTech really look like real wood?
Yes, and this is the part people are sceptical about until they hold a board. The Advanced PVC collections use multitonal color blending, wire-brushed texture and crosscut cathedral grain — Vintage reads as exotic hardwood, Landmark as white oak or walnut. Come pick up a sample and decide with it in your hand rather than on a screen.
What board widths can I get?
Every collection comes in the standard 5.5″ board. Select collections, including Vintage and Legacy, also come in a narrow 3.5″ and a wide 7.25″. Mixing all three across one deck is called a multi-width layout, it is the single fastest way to make a deck look custom rather than catalogue, and most yards in California do not stock the widths to do it. We do.
How does TimberTech perform in a California fire zone?
Select TimberTech collections carry an Ignition Resistant designation, a Class A Flame Spread Rating and WUI compliance. Because those designations apply to specific collections rather than the whole brand, tell us your project address and we will confirm which collections are listed for it. We host the California State Fire Marshal listings and code reports on this site so you can hand them straight to a plan reviewer.
What is the actual difference between Advanced PVC and Composite?
Advanced PVC has no organic material in it and uses Cool Touch Technology to run up to 30° cooler underfoot, with a Limited Lifetime product warranty and 50-year fade and stain cover. Composite uses up to 85% recycled content behind a four-sided polymer cap, with up to 50 years on both. If the deck is poolside, in the desert, or in a fire zone, go PVC. Otherwise composite is the better value and nobody will be able to tell from six feet away.
Is TimberTech more expensive than wood?
On the invoice, yes. Over twenty years, no. Wood needs sanding, staining and sealing every year, and then it needs replacing. Run the total and TimberTech usually comes out lower — and you get the better-looking deck the whole way through.
Can I see and touch it before I commit?
Yes. Our San Jose branch carries TimberTech samples on display, and all four branches hold color samples and product literature. Call the branch and we will have the boards out on the counter when you arrive.
